A tribute to John Howell

Christmas Weight Pentathlon - Northwood 2 December 2006

The MMTG put this on to say "thank you", to members and renew friendships developed over the years. The day was clear and bright, and did not seem like early December, but early spring. I was expecting any number from five to twenty-five to turn up and at one stage we had four, joined (replete with mince pies !!) by Barbara and Wendy, who had set off from, "way down south", at 6.00 am (it was now 10.00am!!)

Being informal, we started slightly late, and everyone concerned got some positives out of the competition, which was relaxed and humorous, but at the same time competitive. We moved from event to event, seamlessly, apart from Dan getting his mini-tractor-stuck in the mud!! We found the good weather lasted until the last implement had been thrown, IE at about 1.00pm.

Afterwards, we all went to the pavilion, for Barbara's mince pies, hot drinks, chat and results. I then gave a brief out line of next year, more of which next year! Needless to say we will make an annual event of this in formal gathering. We all said our "cheerios", and were on our various ways by 1.40pm.
Can I take this opportunity of thanking on behalf of the competitors my wife, Jean, for her help throughout. Chris Brackstone, for prompt, accurate results. Mick Warrilow and Kevin Sproson, the judges and last , but not least Dan (center staff), for coming in unpaid to see that all equipment was where it should be, and on time. Many, many thanks !!

"Christmas eatings, and an eventful ,but peaceful 2007"!!!?
