Throw a Mile - Northwood 13 January 2007 My wife Jean was to record all the throws, and so the initial idea was to put up our six berth tent, as a shelter. It proved too difficult to extricate from our loft, so on to plan B. With tarpaulin, line props, stakes, rope, and gaffer tape, Jean and I started to set up a shelter "eat your heart out Ray Mears"! Or so we thought. We were just putting the final touches to our construction at 9.15 am, when a particularly vicious gust 'blew' the lot away, plan C, no plan C, so we abandoned the idea of a shelter. I was originally expecting about seven throw-a-milers. On the day, I expected four, but ended up with, Rob Dean, Martin Roberts, and myself. At about 10.00 am. People started turning up, including the Deans, Gill, Alan and Rob, Graham Middleton, Dan with his trusty tractor, laden with most of the equipment needed, and Martin Roberts. All these people must be thanked, plus Mick Warrilow, and Kevin Sproston, and last but most importantly my wife Jean, who 'froze' all day collecting, and calculating results. I gave out the plan of the day, start times, rest periods etc, and we made a start at approx 10.45 am. Things went well particularly for Rob and Martin, but yours truly was soon 200m plus behind, due to uncharacteristic poor technique (approx. 700m. of 'good' distance 'flew' into the cage this day, I was not best pleased!!). Anyway, Rob finished the challenge at about 3.30 pm. shortly followed by Martin, who then started again but with the 5 kg., not the 7.26 Kg., either by design or sympathy; it helped me in the final surge (by the time I finished he had completed over 1/4 of a mile at this 'new' challenge ! Well done and thanks, Martin!!). As it turned out I finished by about 4. 30 pm. Did I say rain? Yes, by now it was raining, well cold drizzle at least. To say I ached all over is just a phrase, but it must have been a consequence of noticing I had done something to at least one of my toes (when grounding my right foot), after about ten throws, but what is a blue toe, cherry red at the end, with blackened nail in comparison to the funds we raised for MMTG!? Well done to all who took part. Next year if we run this again, we look forward to more than about four members (two members at this venue Hugh Richardson and Dave Russell, else where, different times and dates), out of about thirty, trying to join the 'throw-a- mile' club!!! Overall the day was excellent. (C.S.S.H. 16.01.07) © 2005-2009. Midland Masters Throwers Group. |
